Failed Bullo Pill achievement
HW Sharpness 09:16 8.5m approx
Rod Howell only after I decided three up with Dave Allen was not advisable in forecat 5-6.
HW Sharpness 09:16, 8.5m (tbc)
6:30 Arrived to find Avocet well afloat
6:45 Brought Avocet into floating jetty to hoist sails.
7:12 SW 4-5 Left Pill
7:51 Haywards
8:05 SW 4-5 Sharpness Dock
8:24 Brims Pill Dead run and time for coffe from flask
8:54 BULLO PILL No wind in lee and strong flood
Tried rowing downstream along bank. Made slow progress but in view of 1/2 mile along in lee of high ground / bank where it was windless we opted to cross to further bank.
Strong current swept us past the actual pill which had been hidden by moords boat on bank and by the time we reached the shallows on the Arlingham side we must have been 1/4 mile upstream of Bullo.
Very slow progress against tide initially but as the wind increased we started making good progress downstream. Waved to a solitary dog walker on the bank
9:40 SW 4 Under power lines crossing the river
Picked up first of ebb tide about 1/3 mile before Hook point
SW 5-6 On rounding the point we encountered the most testing conditions of the whole trip with short sharp waves and strong wind beat which lasted until we were below the Purton Hulks and near that shore and below the site of the railway bridge. From then on we had no problem with waves.
10:50 Off Sharpness Dock
Chose to follow the Lydney bank down to Cone Pill and had a relatively smooth passage. Saw one man on the industrial putcher rack but otherwise no one at all. Certainly no boats.
11:50 SW 4 Rounded Counts for fine reach home.
12:02 Entered Pill and picked up bow mooring with relative ease 5 minutes later
12:20 Rod was just able to pull tender in with painter over mud so I could climb onto floating jetty.
Enjoyed sandwiches and beer in Clubhouse before going home well satisfied with the sail
NB Rudder was lifting to top of lower pintle and port hand jib sheet pulley on hull pulled away before Counts on the return leg.
